There is no room for jealousy in the body of Christ. That’s not to say it doesn’t exist, but instead, we need to ignore it. God created us to know – and to truly live – secure in our place and purpose. While looking for bible verses tonight related to letting go, I came across a passage from 2 Corinthians 12. However, when I searched to read the whole chapter, I incorrectly typed 1 Corinthians 12. Here I am, reading the text below, when I realize what I’m mistakenly reading is exactly what I need. Thank you God!
For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the organs in the body, each one of them, as he chose. – 1 Corinthians 12: 14-18
If you’re not a mother or father, you are still important. If you’re not a CEO, you are still important. If you’re not a husband or wife or a girlfriend or a boyfriend, you are still important. If she doesn’t call you back, you are still important. If he found someone new, you are still important. Jealousy is a dangerous thing – while keeping you focused on what’s not yours, jealousy at its core makes you doubt your own worth. Which really means you doubt God’s creating you and God’s plan for you.
We each are given a calling. That calling is defined by God, not the world. No matter what society tells you or where you “think” you should be “by now,” God has given you a path created just for you. He calls you by name and knows everything about you – to him, you are the world! Do not be jealous of others. If you were like them, where would we find the special gift only you possess? As God arranged the organs in their exact place, so he created you…in your exact place…with your exact skills and talents. Do not allow yourself to feel insignificant or jealous because of the life someone else lives. Your life matters and you don’t know the incredible things God has in store for you.
